Cool Roof Advantages

With all the attention on the environment over the past decade, we’re all doing our part to try to protect the world around us.  Ironically, the Cool Roof is a way to not only contribute to that protection, but protect your business bottom line, all at the same time. That is truly a win-win situation!

What is a “Cool Roof”?

According to Energy.gov, a “cool roof” is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof”.  Though this particular governmental website is designed more toward residential, rather than commercial roofing, the premise remains the same.

We all know that lighter colors reduce heat absorption.  By utilizing light (or white) colors, particularly if combined with some form of reflective coating, we can use our roofs to reflect some of the heat of the sun.

Cool roof coatings are white or have special reflective pigments that can reflect sunlight.  They can protect your roof surface from heat, UV and chemical damage.  Some offer water protection and offer restorative features.

Temperatures on your commercial roof can easily top 180°F or more.  As you can well imagine, this kind of heat causes your building’s air conditioning to work overtime.  A cool roof can reflect up to 85% of this heat, resulting in roof temperatures much closer to ambient, thereby reducing your air conditioning needs.

In buildings located in cooler climes, the increased insulation associated with keeping the building warm in the winter also keeps it warmer in the summer.

Advantages of Installing a Cool Roof

There are many benefits to installing a cool roof roofing system.  Here are just a few:

  • Reduced energy costs. As much as 30% to 50% reductions in cooling costs
  • Reduced carbon footprint.  As 32% of all carbon emissions come from the generation of electricity, your reduced use also reduces your corporate carbon footprint.
  • Increased longevity.  Reduction of heat and UV on your roofing system increases the longevity of your underlying roofing structure.
  • Lower maintenance costs. Scheduled inspections and a maintenance program are highly recommended.
  • Improved air quality. By reducing the need to use your air conditioning, you potentially improve the quality of the air in your building.
